In this interview with FROCKUP Magazine, Reuben James chats about his multidisciplinary performing arts company Variation 3 and their upcoming production Bent. We discuss the origins and aims of Variation 3, the challenges and joys of uniting different artistic disciplines, and the need to find fresh ways of representing queer lives and stories through the arts.
Variation 3 fuses circus, dance and visual arts with the aim of properly exploring and representing the lives and stories of the LGBTQI+ community. Formed during Melbourne’s Covid lockdown, and seeks to remove the barriers between artistic disciplines, questioning why different mediums could not come together on stage and collaborate cohesively.
Throughout the performance of Bent the ensemble dance, tumble and paint in an ongoing exploration of queer life. The show leaves no space to question queer lives, focussing instead on what is possible when accepted and cherished as all lives should be. Bent will feature as part of the Midsumma Festival and will be performed at Theatre Works from the 19th to the 22nd of April.
